Guitars Dont Fly
Sign of the Times EP
Alexandria's Guitars Dont Fly (GDF) are not ashamed to admit their biggest influences include Oasis - once the coolest band in the world, then the uncoolest by far, and now once again restored to coolness in the eyes of whoever it is that decides these things.
If you've not been convinced by their latest album and still think Oasis are about as cool as a dose of the clap, try putting them to the back of your mind and giving GDF's latest offering a listen.
Sure, the signature Oasis wall of sound has found its way onto this EP, particularly on the uber-powerful My Imaginary Friend, a song with so much drive that it should require you to sit a test before playing it.
However, there are no self indulgent three-note guitar solo's to crush your tolerance levels (you'd have thought Liam would have used some of his millions to buy his daft brother one of them Guitar Solo's for Dummy's books by now) and have you reaching for the pause button.
Any time the lead guitar makes an appearance on this demo it does so with some purpose.
The title track, Sign of the Times, is a nice bouncy number that would induce mass foot tapping in a cemetary. We suspect GDF have drawn influence from the likes of The Fratellis on this track and maybe even been swayed by the sounds of their pals, The Shakes.
The End completes the trio of new songs from a band who have been together less than a year and are already gathering a good following.
It teases with its delecate intro and just when you think you're in for a lush ballad, it turns into a beast of a rock song that offers to "save your soul". It may not do that, but it will have you bouncing on the spot the next time you see them live.
There is enough here to predict that GDF will continue to pelase those loyal followers and that they have stuck to their guns is something to admire.
At times they sound a little like the legendary Counting Crows and that is no bad thing.
As far as demos go, Sign of the Times by GDF is a good effort.
